Belong, Believe, Become: The Importance of Christian Community for 21st Century Evangelism

Some Christian tradition has emphasized “believe, belong, and become” as its model for evangelism and discipleship. What I observe in my world is a different sequence in how people are experiencing these three realities. I am watching people belong, believe, and become. Did you catch that? Belonging comes first! Broken Heart

Ducky Do… My wife and I discovered NCIS late in life. Cutting the cable and living on Netflix made us desperate. One of my favorite characters is Ducky, Dr. Mallard, the Englishman who does the autopsies on victims who turn up in the series. Ducky is brilliant. He can look at a corpse and give … MORE

Person looking into aspen trees in fall

We live in a dysfunctional world. It has destructive rhythms and broken ways of relationship. Love has to be earned. Shaming and blaming are ways people avoid responsibility and seek to manipulate others. The culture demands impossible perfection which leads to frantic image management which in turn short-circuits wholehearted living. Harsh comparisons and cutthroat competition … MORE

Pins on map

A Biblical Theology of Missions? My earliest efforts at demonstrating the missional heart of God were aimed at producing a “biblical theology of mission.” I would look for scriptures that expressed God’s concern for “the nations,” prophecies and passages that included the universal aspect of God’s love. By doing so, I hoped to convince and … MORE

Basketball referee

Just Trying to Be Helpful Basketball is my game and I enjoy watching it at every level. My colleague, David, was going to be watching his (eighth-grade) son’s last game of the season (starting point guard for the varsity team) and I went to cheer Luke on. Throughout the game I felt it necessary to … MORE

Manger

God Is Present In Our World Christmas is about God’s presence in our world in a radically new way. The God who had created the universe, and who had personally interacted with our world in amazing ways (recorded in the Hebrew Scriptures), got up close and personal in the incarnation. The Word became flesh and … MORE

Changes With the arrival last summer of several new Yellowstone Theological Institute team members, my job has gotten simpler. Rachel Toombs has now taken over Old Testament classes while I focus on the New Testament and Ministerial Studies, my specialty. But I am most relieved by the fact that Scott Hamilton is our new Provost … MORE

God’s Available Kingdom Is Good News… John the Baptist: “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand” Matthew 3:2 Jesus: “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand” Matthew 4:17 The Gospel according to Matthew will not let us miss the core message of John the Baptist who prepared the way, and Jesus … MORE

Brilliant diamond

History and Destiny Friends of mine in Texas have what I call a Christian country rock band that they call “Dust to Glory.” I love the thought of that. It speaks of both our humble human history AND our glorious ultimate destiny in Christ! Crafted from the dust of the earth at creation, we are … MORE

Christ on the cross

Jesus’ Last Words From the cross of Calvary Jesus uttered seven statements that are often referenced as “The Seven Last Words of Jesus.” Of course, these are NOT the seven last words that Jesus ever spoke. The risen Christ had much to say, and he continues to speak to those who follow him! But as … MORE
