SUMMARY:Good Friday Tenebrae Service
DESCRIPTION:We invite you to join us as we remember Christ’s sacrifice at our community Good Friday Tenebrae service on April 18 at Yellowstone Theological Institute. \nThe word Tenebrae comes from the Latin\, meaning “shadows.” This traditional form of commemorating Christ’s sacrificial death on the cross dates back at least to the ninth century. \nThe purpose of the service is to lead worshippers through a meditation on Christ’s atoning sacrifice\, lament and confession of our sin which necessitated this sacrifice\, and prayer and praise for this mighty act of God in preparation for the celebration of Christ’s resurrection on Easter Sunday. \nThis service includes Scripture readings\, hymns\, and symbolic elements including candles and the strepitus (Latin)\, a loud noise that occurs after the final candle is extinguished\, symbolizing the tearing of the veil to the Holy of Holies\, the earthquake\, and the physical finitude to Christ’s\, “it is finished.”

SUMMARY:Leadership for a Thriving Church
DESCRIPTION:Join leadership experts Dr. Derry Long and Rev. Mike Gammill for the following brief presentations related to principles critical for leading healthy churches [Download Event Flyer]: \n \n\n‘How to Help Those You Care About Thrive’\nDr. Derry Long will explore four areas—all with biblical roots—that are present in any organization (including churches!) and how leaders can help their people thrive in these areas. Topics include: \n\nThe four common arenas of any nearly any enterprise.\nThe surprising biblical source of these four arenas.\nThe second level to a goal that gives motivation and provides identification.\nWhy entrepreneurial leaders struggle with the success they have created.\nTwo primary connectors that\, when absent\, can thwart any individual common arena.\n\nPresenter: Dr. Derry Long\nDr. Derry Long is Professor of Christian Leadership at YTI and has served in ministry for over 45 years in many roles – pastor\, church planter\, pastoral coach\, regional overseer\, and international teacher. He was a lead pastor at Evangelical Churches for 27 years in metro and rural areas\, in addition to serving as superintendent of the Western Conference of the Evangelical Church from 1994-2000 with oversight of 30 churches. From 2006-2017 he was chief strategy officer for Journey Church in Bozeman and pastoral coach for Harvest Church and its five campuses in Montana and Wyoming. He earned his Ph.D. from the University of Birmingham\, England\, and started a consulting company. \n‘Managing the Tension Between Growth and Mission’\nLeading the church as a sacred organization in modern secular society requires more from pastors than disciple-making through sermons\, mentoring\, and pastoral counseling. From recruiting boards to raising funds to resource the vision\, pastoral leaders face a number of organizational responsibilities that can help\, distract\, or even hurt the church’s mission to make disciples. In this LCLI\, Rev. Mike Gammill explores how the moral philosophy of Alasdair MacIntyre illuminates how the traditional Christian virtues can protect Christian leaders against corrosive influences. \nPresenter: Rev. Mike Gammill\nRev. Mike Gammill is Senior Lead Navigator with Auxano Consulting and serves as Lecturer in Leadership Studies at YTI. As a leadership consultant\, Mike helps church teams across the country create breakthrough clarity to realize their vision\, and he is passionate about helping leaders show and model the way of Jesus. In addition to facilitating collaborative conversations that lead to strategic clarity and action\, Mike is Auxano’s Team Building Specialist and has helped churches ranging from 50 to over 15\,000 in weekend worship attendance to optimize their ministry teams and organizational leadership. Mike is an Ordained Elder in The Evangelical Church\, and is currently working on his Ph.D. through Wesley House Cambridge. \nDownload Flyer

SUMMARY:Politics\, Power\, and the Future of the Church
DESCRIPTION:The church in America has come to a crossroads\, and it must ask the question: How should the church be involved in politics? American citizens have a responsibility to vote; it is one of the privileges of being a citizen. But what is our responsibility as Christians? In a world where politics have been reduced to power and control; where political parties are constantly bombarding Christians with supposed “biblical” or “theological” reasons for voting for their specific candidate; where name calling and outrageous lies have become the norm…what are Christians to do? What will become of the church in this environment? Dr. Jay Smith\, President of Yellowstone Theological Institute\, seeks to give an answer to this and other questions\, as he discusses\, “Politics\, Power\, and the Future of the Church.” \nVIEW LIVE STREAM \n\nPresenter: Dr. Jay Smith\nDr. Jay Smith is president of Yellowstone Theological Institute. Dr. Smith has served as minister of youth\, music and as senior pastor in churches in Texas\, Oklahoma\, Washington and Montana and has taught at Howard Payne University\, Baylor University and the United States Naval Academy. He earned his PhD from Trinity College-University of Bristol (UK) and DMin from Carey Theological College. Preaching regularly around the country\, Dr. Smith is able to share his love for theology\, ministry\, adventure and music. For Dr. Smith\, the love of Jesus Christ and his family serve as his heartbeat and foundation. He and his wife\, Melissa\, have two daughters\, Catherine and Hannah. Dr. Smith also writes all the music for the Montana State University band programs. In his free time\, he enjoys hiking in the mountains of Montana and sharing his musical talents with Bozeman. \n\n \nSchedule:\n\n7—7:15 — snacks and drinks\n7:15—8:00 – Presentation: “Politics\, Power\, and the Future of the Church” (Presenter: Dr. Jay Smith)\n8:00—8:30 – Q&A\n\nThis presentation is part of the LCLI series on “Unique Challenges Facing the Church and Culture.”

SUMMARY:Adventure Isn’t an Option for the Church Today!
DESCRIPTION:Physical and mental health is all the rage. And it should be. Yet\, although life expectancy has improved over the past century\, Americans live shorter\, more painful\, and more distressed lives than our international peers. The solutions are myriad but one that is critical is also simple: do something adventurous. And the church needs to get in the game! \n\nPresenter: Rev. Vern Streeter\nVern Streeter was senior pastor of Harvest Church in Billings\, Montana for 23 years. Prior to planting Harvest\, Vern was a youth pastor for 10 years at Faith E. Church (the “Mother” church of Harvest) also in Billings. Vern has 1 wife\, 2 daughters\, 2 sons-in-law\, 2 grandsons\, and myriad other interests. For fun Vern likes to hunt\, climb\, ski\, sail\, backpack\, ride his horse deep into the backcountry\, ride both road and mountain bikes\, drive fast\, and fly his paraglider. Occasionally Vern sits down and watches sports on TV. He is Lecturer in Adventure and Theology at YTI. \n \n\nJoin us as we consider:\n\nWhat is adventure and is it just for the adrenaline junkies? \nWhat does God think about adventure? \nHow can the church obey the Great Commission through adventure? \nWhat should the church do now that we know Play is the central activity of the post-modern culture? \nAll that and The problem with Sunday. \n\nSchedule:\n\n7—7:15 — snacks and drinks\n7:15—8:00 – Presentation: “Adventure Isn’t an Option for the Church Today!” (Presenter: Rev. Vern Streeter)\n8:00—8:30 – Q&A\n\nThis presentation is part of the LCLI series on “Unique Challenges Facing the Church and Culture.”
