As I sat at my daughter’s piano recital singing along to “What Child is This?” I was thinking of what this holiday season means to me when we started singing the lyrics “haste, haste to bring him laud” which I have always thought, up until yesterday, were “haste, haste to bring him love.” This season is about love. It is about loving one another because of our similarities, our differences, and our imperfections. And it is through our love of one another that we get all of the other meaningful things throughout the holiday season – joy, gratitude, a sense of family, and a sense of community.
I’ve always appreciated the close of a year as a time for reflection on the events of the year past and a time to think about what is important in the year to come. This year, for me, will be about being mindful and intentional — about the present moment and the people around me — so that I can hold on to and hopefully strengthen these ideas of community, family, gratitude, joy, and ultimately love throughout the year.
