In the Northern Hemisphere, Advent begins as we move through the shortest days of the year. It is a season that arrives inside darkness, not after it, and in moving through the rhythms of Advent, we are asked to sit in the darkness, not to rush past it.
This truth is central to Christmas: Jesus is the Light sent into the world “…to shine on those living in darkness”. For Christians, the light sent to us is also within us.
As a child I remember Christmas being the only time I could have candles in my room. Somehow it was poignant, even at a young age, to light those candles that collectively unfolded a holy moment. I marveled at the wonder of our Savior.
