Abstract Expressionism

Color and Movement

February 6–7, 2026

Friday 6:30-9:00pm  |  Saturday 9:00am-3:00pm

Join us for this Arts Practicum where we will examine the development of abstraction via Vasily Kandinsky, the cultural context of the Abstract Expressionist movement, and the use of color and movement as primary components of a work. Participants will make their own colors by mixing pigments and practice layering techniques to create a piece with inspiration from various Abstract Expressionist artists.

Workshop Leader

MARY GAMMILL (M.A., Yellowstone Theological Institute) is Lecturer in Theology and the Arts at YTI. An abstract, explorative artist who expresses her relationship with God in art, Mary is inspired by the symbolism, light, and the theology represented in Christian Art History, as well as the beauty of God’s creation in which she lives. She is working to form an art collaborative in Bozeman.
