YTI is starting the new year with a new and exciting direction, as the institute prepares to take up residence in a historic landmark structure just west of Bozeman.
The YTI Board of Directors made the decision last fall not to build the campus we had planned on building for a variety of reasons. First and foremost, the cost to build has now more than tripled in the last three years: what once was $274 per square foot is now over $800 per square foot. Although we met our capital campaign goal, the price had increased to the point that we were still $4 million dollars short! Second, we are in need of library space, more office space, larger classrooms, and more community space.
Given the costs and the institute’s current needs, the decision was not difficult.
To that end, the board has decided to purchase two buildings just outside the Bozeman city limits for our new home. These structures consist of “The Barn,” which used to house The Farmacy restaurant and two other businesses, and the building which houses the Bozeman Children’s Academy.
YTI will take up residence in “The Barn” building. The Barn is 11,300 square feet over two stories. The institute’s offices will be on the second floor, while the classrooms, library, community space, and kitchen will be on the main floor. (See pictures of the facility below.) The institute hopes to take up residence in the Barn property in time for the 2023-2024 academic year, following the completion of remodeling to meet our purposes.
The facility is clearly visible from Huffine Lane (U.S. Hwy. 191)—in fact, it is a landmark in that part of the community. It also has plenty of parking; is within walking distance to two restaurants and Cold Smoke Coffeehouse; is next to a preschool, which will be a great community partner; and it has a full commercial kitchen which we can lease for an extra income stream.
The building itself was built over 100 years ago as a barn in the Gallatin Valley. This bit of history makes the facility unique!
The Barn property promises to furnish an excellent home for Yellowstone Theological Institute for years to come. The faculty, staff, and students are excited about this facility and the opportunities with which it will afford us!
